Why Would You Need to Have a Tooth Extracted?

There are many different reasons you may need a tooth extraction, including severe damage due to trauma, deep decay, fracture near the gum line, or periodontal disease. We may also need to extract one or more of your teeth as a component of an orthodontic treatment plan to eliminate crowding and to make room for the remaining teeth to shift into position. Advances in dental technology, anesthesia, and techniques translate into more comfortable and stress-free tooth extractions.

What Can You Expect?

There are two types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical. Most extractions are simple, involving teeth that are visible and readily accessible. Surgical extractions, on the other hand, are more involved and are required to remove teeth that are weak, impacted, or fractured under the gum.

We will start the procedure by taking x-rays of the area to visualize the shape and position of the affected tooth to plan the extraction. We will numb the area using a local anesthetic for your comfort and are happy to offer nitrous oxide sedation, if needed, to ensure you are relaxed during treatment.

What Is the Tooth Extraction Recovery Process?

Right after extraction, we will place a piece of soft gauze in the tooth’s socket to control any bleeding. Make sure to follow the care instructions we provide to ensure a smooth recovery and take the pain medication we prescribe as needed.

You’ll need to consume soft foods like yogurt, pudding, or mashed potatoes for a few days. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that can irritate the extraction site. Smoking can slow down healing, so it's best to avoid it after an extraction.

Avoid rising on brushing around the extraction area for the first 24 hours. After that, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep it clean. We recommend that you avoid spitting, drinking from a straw, and smoking during the first couple of days after the extraction to prevent the blood clot forming at the extraction site from being dislodged, which could result in a painful complication known as dry socket.
