Routine and Deep Dental Cleanings – What’s the Difference?

Dental cleaning

At Roam Dental, we are proponents of prevention to keep dental disease at bay. We are pleased to offer a range of preventive services, including routine and deep dental cleanings, to reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease and promote healthier, brighter smiles. The question is, what type of dental cleaning is right for you?

How Often Should You Schedule Dental Cleanings?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends dental exams and cleanings at intervals determined by your dentist. In general, most of our patients with healthy teeth and gums require twice-yearly dental cleanings. However, those with gum disease or risk factors for dental problems may require more frequent care.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

Periodontal, or gum disease, is a serious chronic oral health concern that affects your gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone supporting your teeth. It usually results from plaque buildup on your gum line, which causes irritation and gum inflammation. Periodontal disease stands as the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It has also been linked to a host of health concerns, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and more.

What Are Routine Dental Cleanings?

Routine dental cleanings are those you have every six months to keep your smile healthy and sound. Our hygienist will gently remove any plaque or tartar buildup on your teeth, along your gum line, and between your teeth line using a dental scaler. Next, we will floss between your teeth to remove any remaining plaque or debris and polish your teeth, leaving them clean and bright. We may also recommend a topical fluoride application to help prevent cavities.

Routine dental cleanings have been shown to significantly reduce your risk of tooth decay, cavities, periodontal disease, bad breath, and a host of health concerns. During your visit, we will evaluate every aspect of your oral health and check for signs of early decay or gum inflammation, allowing for prompt treatment.

What Are Deep Cleanings?

Routine dental cleanings help maintain healthy teeth and gums. If, however, we see signs of gum disease, we may recommend a deep dental cleaning known as scaling and root planing. Similar to your regular cleaning, we will start by scaling, which involves removing plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth and along the gum line. Next is root planing, which involves gently cleaning and smoothing out the tooth root surfaces to help promote healing.

Scaling and root planing has been shown to reverse gum disease in its earliest stage known as gingivitis. If, however, the condition has progressed to periodontitis, deep dental cleanings can help manage it and prevent its progression and further damage to your gums and structures supporting your teeth.

Following your deep dental cleaning, we typically recommend periodontal maintenance visits every 3 to 4 months. These include professional cleanings, thorough gum health evaluations, and any necessary interventions to maintain your gum health.
